#TechThursday here with a word from @savvamarina_sova – to help you practice passive voice again😎

It’s no secret that some popular websites and social media networks are 封杀-d in China⛔️

⭐️

封 fēng – to seal
杀 shā – to kill; extremely

⭐️

封杀 fēngshā – to block; ban (from the public)

⭐️

被封杀 bèi fēngshā – to get blocked, banned

⭐️⭐️

And it’s not just about apps, websites of movies. At some point in their careers, many Chinese celebrities were 封杀-d, too! For example, a famous actress Tang Wei (汤唯), who you’ll now spot in various commercials, was banned in China after starring in the movie “Lust, Caution” (色戒).

⭐️⭐️⭐️

How would you ask “Why was Tang Wei banned”?

@plazmatix: 汤唯为什么被封杀了?

@wenling_lam: Is 封杀 the same as 拉黑?

@yourmandarin: @plazmatix 👍🏅

@yourmandarin: @wenling_lam 拉黑 is more like “to blacklist”, that’s something you can do to your phone or WeChat contacts😅

@hbutt887: 封杀

@hbutt887: 你好

@hbutt887: 你好吗

@aftikandri: 挡住呢?也是可以用吗?举例子汤唯为什么被挡住了?

@agnescarita: Can you add to form passive voice/passive word? Or does only work in this case?

@amandaswampler: Tang Wei weishenme bei fengsha?

@chrzani: 嘻哈歌经常被封杀😐

@saad_khanz: 脸书封杀在中国!对吗?

@aznfighting: Very helpful word! I don’t know how to say it.. euhmm… 为什么汤唯被封杀了吗?

@yourmandarin: @aftikandri 不行,挡住是个具体动作(比如”block the way”),而封杀是抽象的 (“ban a movie”)

@yourmandarin: @agnescarita Yess! Check out this week’s post about #ym

@yourmandarin: @amandaswampler 👍🏅

@yourmandarin: @chrzani 哈哈,没错😉

@yourmandarin: @saad_khanz 👍脸书在中国被封杀

@yourmandarin: @aznfighting Yes, perfect!👍🏅 And just fyi, you can also move 为什么 after the noun: “汤唯为什么…”

@xiarong248: 那真的他为什么被封杀了?🤔

@agnescarita: Is there any grammar to express something like “While you are at it…” for example “While you are cooking noodle, cook me fried rice as well”. How to put it in words… “since you are going to do A, do B as well” @yourmandarin

@john_damac: 为啥汤唯被封杀的?

@aznfighting: @yourmandarin oh, I didn’t know, thank you! 😄
