Last phrase in 位 wèi series – super useful! – to use when you receive a call from an unknown number:

哪位? Nǎ wèi? 👤

哪位? Who's calling? | YourMandarin

⭐️

哪 nǎ – which
位 wèi – polite measure word for people

⭐️

📞 哪位? nǎwèi? – Who’s calling?

⭐️

Notice that it’s more polite than asking 你是谁?(Nǐ shì shéi? Who are you?), because of that polite 位 wèi form.

If you’re uncomfortable to use the short version, use the full one:

👩🏻‍💼 请问你是哪位?
Qǐng wèn nǐ shì nǎ wèi?

(But mind that for locals, it’s okay to start a conversation with 喂 wèi – hello – 哪位啊 nǎwèi a – who’s calling?)

⭐️⭐️

You can also use this phrase on Wechat, whenever you receive a friend request from someone you don’t know. As @savvamarina_sova shared, she once replied ‘请问你是哪位’ to someone without thinking – and this person was like ‘Oh sorry, you’re Chinese, I thought you were a foreigner😳’

⭐️⭐️⭐️

How would you say “Hello? Who’s calling?”

@anthonychristi: 你好?谁给我打个电话?

@abdullatif_dalloul: 你好!哪位?你是谁?

@jtradingco: 喂,您好,你是谁啊?

@sightseeinggurl: 喂,你是哪位?

@xiarong248: 刚才学到这个字!😄

@jaeyoun.kim: 你好,你是哪位?
