Good morning, Mandarin learners!

How did you find the quizzes this week?

This week we tried to align the posts with Stories, so you could have a better experience learning and practicing the new words right away.

Below comes a recap of this week’s Stories.

For your convenience, correct answers are marked  ✅, and wrong answers  ❌.

1. How many can fit?

Quiz (Scooter) | YourMandarin

电动车上坐了几个小孩?

Diàndòngchē shàng zuòle jǐ ge xiǎohái?

两个 liǎngge – two

三个 sānge – three

“电动车上坐了两个小孩 Diàndòng chē shàng zuòle liǎngge xiǎohái” (“There were 2 kids sitting on the scooter”) was the right answer to this Monday’s story. Notice how the question was only about kids! So the answer was 两个, two. And 61% of you (787👤) have chosen the correct answer. Well done!

You might want to read a post about electric scooters if you haven’t yet.

2. Ticket Office

Quiz (Plane Tickets) | YourMandarin

本店不卖…

Běn diàn bù mài…

 机票 jīpiào – plane tickets

✅ 车票 chēpiào – train tickets

“本店不卖车票 Běndiàn bù mài chēpiào” (This shop doesn’t sell train tickets) was indeed the correct answer, as 58% of you (637👤) have chosen. To get the answer to this quiz, you were supposed to watch the ad and see which option –  机票 or 车票 – did not appear in the ad. (By the way, 机票 jīpiào is a short way to say 飞机票 fēijī piào, and 车票 chēpiào is a short way to say 火车票 huǒchē piào). Since the text 机票 appears in the ad, it means this shop sells plane tickets! (If you paid close attention, you’d also notice that this shop deals with visas and other services related to traveling abroad).

3. Same Or Different?

Quiz (Shoes) | YourMandarin

她穿的两只鞋子(是)…

Tā chuān de liǎng zhī xiézi (shì)…

❌ 一样的 yíyàng de – the same

✅ 不一样 bù yíyàng – different

“她穿的两只鞋子不一样 Tā chuān de liǎng zhī xiézi bù yíyàng” (The two shoes she is wearing aren’t the same) was the correct answer to this poll, and 91% (1142👤) of you nailed it. This picture was sent by my friend, and we still don’t know why the shoes were 不一样!

4. It’s Movie Time!

Quiz (Movies) | YourMandarin

电影院里选择坐在第一排的人…

Diànyǐngyuàn lǐ xuǎnzé zuò zài dì yī pái de rén…

不多 bù duō – not many

❌ 很多 hěn duō – a lot

“电影院里选择坐在第一排的人不多 Diànyǐngyuàn lǐ xuǎnzé zuò zài dì yī pái de rén bù duō” (There are not many people who choose to sit in the front row in a movie theatre) was the right answer to this poll, as 87% (967👤) have voted for. That’s a nice option if you don’t want to be surrounded by too many people – just buy tickets to 第一排! (Also, for a popular movie or at a popular time slot, these might be the only tickets left) 🍿️

5. What’s Our Row?

Quiz (Movie Ticket) | YourMandarin

我们坐第几排?

Wǒmen zuò dì jǐ pái?

 1

 ✅ 2

The answer was “row number two”. And 69% (594👤) of you have guessed it right! This is a real movie ticket I had for the movie Black Panther. The first line contains the name of the movie theater, then comes the time and date, followed by the hall number (厅 tīng – hall, 一号厅 yī hào tīng – hall number one).

The fourth line contains our answer: “row 2 seat 08”. Here 排 pái means “row”, and 坐 zuò means “seat” (2排08坐). It’s then followed by the name of the movie, 黑豹 hēi bào (Black Panther), and type – 数字 shùzì (digital) 3D.

Next time you go to the movie, notice what your ticket says, and try to translate it into Chinese😉

6. Surpise 🙁

Quiz (Roadworks) | YourMandarin

他们正在…

Tāmen zhèngzài…

✅ 修理 xiūlǐ – fixing (something)

❌ 休息 xiūxi – having a rest

“他们正在修理 Tāmen zhèngzài xiūlǐ” (They are fixing (something) right now) was, unfortunately, the answer here, as 88% (1082👤) of you have guessed right. Unfortunately because they’ve been fixing something right in front of my house for the past 2 days – starting with the drill and hammer every morning😫 After my neighbours and I saw the size of the hole the workers had digged, we’d figured it must be fixing the 排水 pái shuì (drainage) system…

If you’d like to review the use of the word 正在, here’s a post about it.

7. Nightmare Continues

Quiz (Still Fixing) | YourMandarin

他们…

Tāmen…

❌ 修完了 xiūwán le – finished fixing

✅ 还在修  – are still fixing

“他们还在修 Tāmen hái zài xiū” (They’re still fixing) was the answer here, as 85% (537👤) of you have guessed. And yes, they 还在修 even now!
