Today, for our #TechThursday, let’s look at a (somehow) water-related verb💦
It describes a habit that’s still quite common in China:
吐 tǔ – to spit
吐痰 tǔtán – to spit
随地吐痰 suídì tǔtán – to spit in public (“where one pleases”)

It comes down to habits and manners, and these things vary across cultures. For a long time, public spitting wasn’t seen as a sign of ill-mannered behavior in China. It was just a way to get rid of excessive fluids, and get the whole body balanced – like we blow our nose, right?

Of course this logic won’t save you from cringing next time you hear someone 吐痰 tǔtán-ing loudly🤧
Don’t worry – no one agonizes about it more than locals themselves!

So today, we’re not here to talk about public spitting, but about another verb that starts with 吐 tǔ, and that’s been very popular online💬
Next time you feel excited about a new movie and it turns out bad – feel free to 吐槽 tǔcáo about it on our social media!

吐槽 tǔcáo – to complain; whine about; leave mean comments about something (usually online)

It’s not about being openly hostile. It’s more like moaning and expressing your dissatisfaction:
