Passive voice. How do you express it in Chinese?
The grammar is very simple – just use the 被 bèi particle:
我的📱被偷了
Wǒ de shǒujī bèi tōu le
My phone got stolen
Structure: Object + 被 + verb + 了
❗️Using 了 here is optional, if you’re talking about the present/future, don’t add it😉
⭐️
And if you want to mention [someone] who stole your phone, add them right after 被:
我的📱被[人]偷了
Wǒde shǒujī bèi [rén] tōu le
My phone was stolen [by someone]
我的📱被[他]偷走了
Wǒ de shǒujī bèi [tā] tōuzǒu le
My phone was stolen [by him]
Structure: Object + 被 + 👤 + verb + (sometimes a particle) + 了
❗️Sometimes, if it’s a one-character verb like 偷, people might add an extra character to it (“bèi-tā-tōuzǒu-le” kinda rhymes better than “bèi-tā-tōu-le”). But don’t worry about it much😊

So the grammar of using 被 is very straightforward. Just think whether you need this passive voice at all! There’s almost always another way to say it:
有人偷了我的手机
Yǒu rén tōu le wǒde shǒujī
Someone stole my phone
他偷了我的手机
Tā tōu le wǒde shǒujī
He stole my phone
❗️So the final tip would be to just avoid using 被 in speech, if you have other options😅
(Save it for more formal occasions)

And “My passport got stolen, what should I do?”
