The idea of 拼pīn-ing (sharing) has been very popular among lifestyle apps: car sharing (拼车🚙), apartment sharing (拼房🏠), and so on.
Now it came to sharing the shopping experience together. 🛍 拼团 pīn tuán-ing!

拼 pīn – to join together
团 tuán – to gather, a group

拼团 pīn tuán – “group buying” or group shopping (an online promotion in which a purchase can only be complete if enough people join in)

There is a special platform for this kind of shopping called 拼多多, but this week I had the same experience on Taobao. I needed a pair of 拖鞋 tuōxié (#ym拖鞋) – and discovered I could get a pair which would normally cost ¥188 for only ¥48, if I joined the 拼团 promo👯♀️

The note explained that the system was going to automatically find me a “partner” (2 people to complete the purchase), so in case pairing was complete in 24 hours, the seller would immediately send the package, and if it failed, I’d get a full refund.

It sounded fun to get flip flops this way so I joined – and in half an hour got a notification from Taobao that you can see in the pic👆
