Part I of #月饼 series🌕
Let’s start with classics – traditional mooncakes. 传统月饼 chuántǒng yuèbǐng✨
⭐️
传统 chuántǒng – tradition, traditional
月饼 yuèbǐng – moncake
⭐️
These mooncakes come with traditional fillings that have been around for decades – even centuries!
⭐️
In Shanghai, they are made by famous brands with long history. Around Mid-Autumn festival, you’ll find them at most convenience stores, supermarkets, or in specialized stores around the city.
⭐️⭐️
Let’s split them into 2 types:
🌱Vegan – 净素 jìngsù (with dough made from flour and water only, and with vegan fillings like nuts or beans. So Buddhist monks can eat them too)
🌕Cantonese style – 港式 gǎngshì (with dough made using eggs and butter, and sweet or savory fillings, like lotus root and egg yolk)
⭐️⭐️
Places/brands that sell these mooncakes:
静安寺 Jing’an Temple: 🌱 only
喬家栅 Qiáojiāshān brand: 🌱 and 🌕 (this brand has specialized stores around the city, my fav)
杏花楼 Xìnghuālóu brand: 🌕 only (but you can get them in any FamilyMart or other convenience store)
奇华饼家 Qíhuá Bǐngjiā, Kee Wah Bakery brand: 🌕 only (It’s a famous HK chain, upscale, so look for them inside shopping malls)
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Which classic mooncake would you go for – sweet or salty?
