One of the famous Shanghainese local dishes you’ll notice around if you visit Shanghai are the ‘special’ kind of buns – fried ones. They usually sit in dozens on a huge round frying pan, coated with sesame seeds. Call them 生煎 shēngjiān!

From their name, can you guess how they are made?
“Raw-fry”: raw buns are placed in a frying pan and cooked till ready🔥

The ones you’d find in the street will probably be with meat (鲜肉 xiānròu), usually pork, filing.
But if you go to a chain like Yang’s Dumplings (小杨生煎 xiǎo yáng shēngjiān), you’ll find veggie buns filled with veggies (蔬菜) and mushrooms ( 蘑菇), or shrimps (大虾 dàxiā) and crab meat (蟹肉 xièròu)!
❣️This chain was very popular 5-10 years ago, when TV series 蜗居 wōjū came out. Main female character loved to order Yang’s😄
