@aishwaryagoenka: @yourmandarin what’s the difference between 开车 and 驾 then? In HSK terms, we are taught that using the first term, (to drive a car). Also the 照 in 照片 and the license same? Because again we were told that 照 means an image or picture!
@yourmandarin: @aishwaryagoenka All you’ve just said is correct! In spoken language and in everyday life, use 开车 for ‘driving a car’, and 照 for pictures. There are only a few cases when you’ll need 驾, and they’re all quite formal – related to driving license, driving tests, driving school (驾校), driving-related crimes etc. Same with 照, it can mean ‘license’ but in formal terms like ‘business license’ (营业执照 yíngyè zhízhào), etc. Don’t worry about learning to use them, it’s enough to recognize them😉

@yourmandarin: @joshapolyglot 👍 很好！续签=verb+noun, so you will be understood, but you can’t really put another noun after it. It might be better to say something like “我的驾照快到期了(was about to expire)，所以我上周换证了。”换证 huàn zhèng” means “to renew a certificate”, literally “to exchange a certificate”, coz that’s what they usually do – exchange the old one for the new one😉
