#PowerMonday here with a phrase from @tessahendershott to describe heavy traffic in Chinese – and its modern equivalent!

First comes a phrase perfect for beginners. You might already recognize every word in it:

🚗 车 chē – vehicle; carriage
💧水 shuǐ – water
🐎 马 mǎ – horse
🐲 龙 lóng – dragon

Which make a new phrase:
🔹车水马龙
chē shuǐ mǎ lóng

车水马龙 | YourMandarin

an endless stream of carriages and horses

(“carriages streaming like water🌊, horses moving like dancing dragons🐉”)

❗️Note: This phrase illustrates how language works – lego! – but it’s NOT USED much in modern life. No more carriages or horses around😅

So if you’re stuck in a traffic jam, and would like to say the same about modern-day heavy traffic in Chinese, you can say:

川流不息 heavy traffic in Chinese | YourMandarin

🔹川流不息
chuānliú bùxī
(“Stream flows without stopping”)

⭐️⭐️

For example, you can use it with cars:

🔹川流不息的车流
Chuānliú bùxī de chēliú
(Endless stream of cars 🚗🚎🚕🚙🚑🚌🚒)

And with people:

🔹川流不息的人流
Chuānliú bùxī de rénliú
(Endless stream of people 🏃‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️)

And as a verb:

🔹人群川流不息
Rénqún chuānliú bùxī
The crowd keeps pouring in

⭐️⭐️⭐️

How would you say “Customers keep pouring in”?
(customers – 顾客 gùkè)
