How do people in your country celebrate the birth of a new baby? In China, it’s common to give relatives and friends (亲友) little presents:
诞生礼 dànshēng lǐ 🎁

诞生礼 dànshēng lǐ – a “birth gift”, little gifts presented to friends and relatives when a new baby is born

Traditionally, the gift consisted of red eggs (红蛋 hõngdàn) or “happiness eggs” (喜蛋 xǐdàn) to celebrate the good news 🎉

But in modern day and age, people got creative. So next time your colleagues or friends bring you a 诞生礼盒, you might discover quite unpredictable things inside – red egg-shaped pastry (👆), chicken-shaped cakes, candies, all sorts of cookies…
The shape of gifts has changed, but the tradition remains😊

Also, it gets quite confusing as some people give 诞生礼 once the baby turns 1 month old, while others prefer to celebrate a 100-day “anniversary”😁

@yourmandarin: @rosebordett I think they just order them in bulk when a baby is born! There are some common brands like 喜颂 xisong, 喜福来 xifulai, 爱哆哆 aiduoduo… It doesn’t work the other way around though, you don’t have to buy a present for a colleague who just had a baby😉
